CHALLENGE
Creating a service concept for the given theme Smart City and Open/Big Data
PROCESS& APPROACH
Our project group chose to work on consumption topic to make aware citizens about their expenditures consume more wisely by using data. We identified and solved the problem within this subject in an iterative process by using various methods and tools. We had a user-centered design process, and we focused on distributed system and business aspect of the idea.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
We defined the problem as “How can a digital service be alternative to physical receipt and give the user awareness of consumption through the use of collected data from purchases?"
SOLUTION
SUM is a digital service that gathers and distributes data between private customers and stores. The service is for two different user groups: the private customers (individuals who shop in stores) and the stores. On the private customer side, SUM automatically gathers receipts and creates a customized summaries of spendings. SUM makes it possible for its users to be aware of their spendings. Customers can choose the categories they want to keep track and see. The categories can be according to type or properties of the purchased items such as; grocery/clothing/cosmetics, vegetable/meat/dairy, organic/non-organic, local/export, etc. They can set a weekly or monthly budget limit to help them keep track of how much they spend in general and or in a category. At the same time, SUM saves all the original receipts to make it possible to use for warranty or insurance purposes. SUM Store part is a service that provides data to the stores. In exchange for the delivered purchase data, the stores will receive anonymised data of their customers for the store to get a better understanding of their customer segment and total consumption data of the city.
HOW DOES IT WORK? The service requires a private cloud that where all stores and private customers can access the send data through the internet connection. SUM will provide different software for private customers and stores. The service will be free for the customers that will enable a significant number of customers to join the service. Therefore, stores will be able to have knowledge of large customer segment and will be the paying customer segment.
BENEFITS: There are already existing services which already provides gathered receipts information digitally. However, the private customer does not benefit as much by having only a receipt. SUM services distinguished by providing summaries of purchases and giving an overview of where money was spent on. That is why the private customers might prefer this platform instead of existing ones that only provides receipt data, but does not allow to compare spending between other weeks, months and years in different categories.Private customers can store all their receipts in SUM database and can access them anytime. Stores will benefit by having anonymised customer profiles. Knowing shopping habits of the specific groups would have a possible influence in this business.
OUTCOME
This project is a conceptual project; we delivered a product details the solution and a process report.
